Theater workshop puts kids in the spotlight

     Students from across the area taking part in a two-week youth theater workshop will share what they’ve been working on at a revue performance on July 7.
    Over the course of the workshop, 20 students ranging from grades 4-9 have been perfecting their acting and vocal skills, while learning about various aspects of theatrical performance—choreography, set design, sound and lighting, costuming and wig and makeup design.

     Students will be headed back to school in just six weeks. In preparation for the upcoming school year, the Unit 1 School District has set registration dates.

Doc’s to transition to CVS July 15

Doc’s Drugs Ltd.’s owners Tony Sartoris and Jeff Haran recognized the trends favoring the largest pharmacies, and made a deal to bring one here while preserving what their local stores stand for. CVS purchased all 14 Doc’s locations, will take on their employees, and will expand the product lines being offered.
Sartoris and Haran had had offers in the past from potential buyers who planned to keep some stores and close others; but wouldn’t sell to them.

Electronics recycling site opens July 13

    WILMINGTON — The city of Wilmington will host its first bi-monthly drop-off electronics recycling event on Thursday, July 13.
    The City Council approved an intergovernmental agreement with Will County on June 20 that makes the city one of just a handful of communities where Will County residents can dispose of electronic items.

City pursues grants for work at old city hall

    The city of Wilmington was awarded a grant to help fund a new roof for old city hall.
    Landmarks Illinois last week announced $31,500 in grant funding for one dozen historic preservation projects in Illinois through its Preservation Heritage Fund and Barbara C. and Thomas E. Donnelley II Preservation Fund grant programs.

Arrive Early if Planning a Visit to Starved Rock

UTICA, IL – Independence Day weekend is expected to be busy at Starved Rock State Park, and anyone planning a visit to the site should arrive early in the day and be alert to likely temporary closures on Saturday, July 1 through Tuesday, July 4.

During the Memorial Day weekend in late May, more than 93,000 people visited Starved Rock, and nearly 22,000 people visited nearby Matthiessen State Park during that three-day weekend. Starved Rock State Park was closed temporarily for several hours each of those days when parking lots reached capacity.

Unit 1 offices moving across town

    Moving day has arrived for the Unit 1 School District’s administrative staff.
    Superintendent Dr. Kent Bugg reports the move is slated for Thursday in advance of the administration center’s opening next week.
    Construction and landscaping crews spent the first part of the week putting the finishing touches on the 6,545 sq. foot office building located on the Coal City Middle School campus.
